{"id":4654,"date":"2015-11-20T17:00:20","date_gmt":"2015-11-20T17:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elireview.com\/?p=4654"},"modified":"2015-11-20T20:15:53","modified_gmt":"2015-11-20T20:15:53","slug":"algorthims-make-the-world-human","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elireview.com\/2015\/11\/20\/algorthims-make-the-world-human\/","title":{"rendered":"Eli Review&#8217;s Algorithms &#8211; Making the World More Human"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Hocutt of\u00a0Old Dominion University is curating a conversation at Media Commons on algorithms, specifically what kind of influence educators can have over how they are designed\u00a0and deployed. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mediacommons.futureofthebook.org\/question\/what-opportunities-are-available-influence-way-algorithms-are-programmed-written-executed-a\" target=\"_blank\">The whole conversation is worth reading<\/a>, but our own Bill Hart-Davidson has contributed a short essay in which he discusses the dangers of teaching students to write for algorithms and how algorithms might instead <a href=\"http:\/\/mediacommons.futureofthebook.org\/question\/what-opportunities-are-available-influence-way-algorithms-are-programmed-written-executed-5\" target=\"_blank\">aid the human work of teaching and learning<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rather than trying to create machines that read (or write) like humans, we can instead create systems that give humans a chance to focus more on how we might improve as writers and communicators.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bill gets specific when talking about how that approach has shaped the development of Eli Review:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In our peer learning service Eli Review, for instance, we track activity \u2013 feedback that reviewers and instructors give to writers, as well what writers do with that feedback \u2013 to evaluate the \u201chelpfulness\u201d of a review.
